Collectors’ word

Hang tag

A hang tag, also called a swing tag, is one of the small tags supplied with a new Rolex. The tags serve no practical function, as the warranty is now recorded electronically. Even so, many buyers and collectors expect a Rolex to come with its swing tags, as well as its box and papers.

Which tags come with a Rolex?

A new Rolex comes with more than one tag. One is the seal tag. It was red until 2015. That year Rolex updated its movement technology and began replacing red tags with green ones. Rolex also supplies a second tag, which is rectangular. This one was green until 2016 and has been white since then.

What does a red seal tag mean?

The red tag is a warranty seal. It shows that the watch was certified by COSC. A red seal tag also shows that the watch was certified to keep time within four seconds slow and six seconds fast per day. It also signals that the watch was first sold with a two-year timekeeping guarantee. In short, the tag records two things about the watch when new: the standard it was certified to, and the cover it came with.

Why do collectors want hang tags?

The tags do no practical job. The warranty is now recorded electronically. Collectors want them all the same. Many display them next to their watches when not wearing them. Resale platforms use the term too. Bezel puts its own hang tag on each watch it sells. It refuses returns if that tag has been removed, because it cannot then rule out tampering.
