Two Rolex Submariners from the collection of Al Giddings, co-producer and director of underwater photography on the film Titanic, will make their auction debut at Sotheby’s in New York next month.

The first is a steel ref. 1680, worn by Giddings on more than a dozen dives to the Titanic wreck site. It is a “Red Sub”, with red Submariner text on the dial, a version produced only for the first part of the 1680 run. The estimate is $20,000 to $40,000.

The second is a yellow gold ref. 1680/8 “Nipple Dial” from around 1984. Bill Paxton wore it on screen as Brock Lovett in the film. It is estimated at $30,000 to $60,000.

The 1680 was the first Rolex Submariner with a date, made from about 1969 to 1979 and followed by the ref. 16800.
